Abstract
CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit) is a widespread unofficial software add-on for cheap digital CANON compact cameras that can get unbelievable functionality out of them:
Shooting in raw, automating camera actions with scripts, making time lapse videos, super-fast motion detection (able to catch lightning strikes), extremely short and long exposures, syncing two cameras for stereo photography, rugged film scanning, luminography - painting with light, microscopic photography/depth-of-field stacking, book scanning, aerial photography, stop motion animation, bracketing/high dynamic range, syncing many cameras, using as text file reader, games, communication with other equipment.
Everything you ever wished to be able do with your Canon, you can do avoiding learning and risk of voiding the warranty. Sounds good? Sadly, that's not completely true. There's a pretty steep learning curve involved, especially with writing your own programs.
There is also some risk of damaging your camera with self-made equipment. Being an unofficial project, the CHDK documentation is not ideal and can cause a lot of frustration when things don't work as expected. This workshop tries to address some difficult issues. While doing fun small projects individually or together, it hopes to help you to explore the possibilities and limitations of CHDK while doing fun small projects individually or together; acquire skills necessary to write and debug small programs for the camera; mastering your own remote shutter release, battery packs and other hardware without risking damaging your camera as well as to repairing (seemingly) defective ones; making videos from photographs using free software; compiling programs, and benefiting from the situation where 15 hacked cameras meet together. (Syncing all cameras and arranging some fast rugged 'matrix' shot, for instance..)
Possible structure Day 1-4
Installing CHDK onto cameras, troubleshooting, finding the specific limits of the camera, installing and using scripts, projects planning, hunting for footage.
Hardware- working around battery problems, manufacturing remote trigger, uBasic scripting explained, adapting some scripts, using mencoder to encode videos, starting with projects.
More advanced topics, depending on the participants skills and needs. Photo-sessions inside and outside.
X-posing or hiding, setting up the matrix shot and CHEESING.
To bring along

(*tip: A470 - cheap, has a chdk build for all firmware versions, has an access to card from the side, powered by 2 AA batteries. You might get it from an ebay 'shop' with warranty and 2 weeks return period (not regular auction, but 'sofort kaufen' from professional 'gewerblich' seller) for 50,- 70,- euro. Otherwise one of the Ixus 40, 50, 55, 60, 65 - really small and also relatively cheap.)

The workshop aimed at
15 experimental visual artists, (anti)-photographers/-animators/
-movie makers, amateur astronomers, those who
are not-so-technically versed and experience frustration when running into computer problems and those who could do this on their own, but would like to do it with us.
To participate
Please send an e-mail to workshop∗aa-vv∗org briefly outlining your interests. URL would be helpful too.
Fee
55,- Euro/the whole lot (Including tools and some materials)
(The fee can be flexibly reduced for students and those who want, but can not afford)
Kubo Ludma
Kubo was born in Czechoslovakia, which doesn't exist anymore. He was sad a little. And also because he wanted to be an astronaut, or an inventor, or a garbage man. But life turned it to be different. When he grew up, he started making photos and videos. And everybody said: 'Very nice'. So he made some more and moved to Prague to learn Chinese. Then he stopped learning Chinese and went to Berlin for a weekend and stayed until now. He is studying computer science, but still didn't make up his mind if he likes computers or not. So don't ask him yet.

COOKING BATTERIES - WORKSHOP#1, CRACKLE OFF THE BOX - WORKSHOP#2

COOKING BATTERIES - WORKSHOP & table-installation
CRACKLE OFF THE BOX - WORKSHOP & performance
August 18 - 21, 2010, 11AM - 6PM daily
With: Natalia Borissova Ru/De
@MoKS/Mooste Estonia

COOKING BATTERIES:
Creating recipes from unexpected ingredients to 'cook' batteries; Involving various kind of food and drinks, as well as earth and other to determine how much current and voltage is possible to get with each recipe tried; Wiring batteries in series to increase voltage and in parallel to get more capacity; You might like to design your own (battery-)dish for a table-installation as an artistic outcome.

CRACKLE OFF THE BOX:
How to pull out a wide musical noise-scape from body, food, fruits, vegetables, plants, earth.. while playing (with) them. During the workshop we will build a simple audio amplifier and adapt it's circuit that it turns into a kind of' CrackleBox/Kraakdoos - simple but an expressive touch- and pressure-sensitive instrument. The human body and any conductive matters become a part of an electric circuit (or the other way around) and determine the range of sounds possible. Different people, different materials, different combinations of 'touchpoints' will generate different results. We'll experiment, extend and expand the circuit with food, plants, our bodies and wire it around in space to 'crackle' off the 'box'.

RECONSTRUCTION & MIGRATION

aa-vv is in the process of diy reconstruction (always), migration to Drupal and to the free cultural server called Sanchez.
(apologize for any inconveniences btw... and thanx to Heike Sigert/Markus Arning for the coding-help and Sanchez for this free digital embrace..)
