COOKING BATTERIES

Abstract

The cheese- or grape-battery might not be as useful as a button cell, but they do get it down to around the same size, sufficient to power a LED, LCD display, little radio, or electronic sound circuit and provide some green food for thoughts to experiment further.
In this 1-day session we will be creating recipes and cook up batteries, involving various kind of food and drinks, as well as other unexpected ingredients, determining how much power we can get with each recipe tried; Wiring batteries in series to increase voltage and in parallel to get more capacity; You might like to design your own (battery-)dish for a joined table-installation as an artistic outcome. (btw, all food is a battery, but *battery isn't food* - do not eat those dishes!) So.. let's discover energy in things around us, enjoy, (mis)use, get ideas and know hows.

Welcome
everyone who wants to be powered green;)

Remember to bring

#)Different foodstuffs (more-better): Boiled(!) and raw potatoes and any other raw and boiled vegetables, which have HARD tissues. Any kind of fruits - grapes, bananas, strawberry, apples or/and other food on your choice to design your batteries from. Coca-cola, cheese and wine are good electrolytes too. You might also use some discarded food, not to waste a fresh one.
#)Whatever small electronic device, LEDs or low power DIY circuits you choose to power that run at 3-6 volts or less and less! than 200 mA.
#)Galvanized nails/screw or any zinc-pieces. (if you have)

CRACKLE OFF THE BOX

Abstract

During the workshop we will build a simple audio amplifier and adapt it's circuit that it turns into a kind of' CrackleBox/Kraakdoos - simple but an expressive touch- and pressure-sensitive instrument. The human body and any conductive matters become a part of an electric circuit (or the other way around) and determine the range of sounds possible. Different people, different combination of 'touchpoints' and materials will generate different results. We'll experiment, extend and expand the circuit with food, plants, our bodies and wire it around in space to 'crackle off the box'.

Day1-3
1) Building a simple amplifier and personalizing it, testing 'touchpoints' 2) Extending the circuit with different food and conductive materials, finding interesting combination between extended 'touchpoints' to get some pleasant sonic results. Wiring around, creating an 'interface' inside or/and outside. 3) Testing. A choir of weird crackling by ear. Collaboratively, spatially and interconnectivly.

Welcome
Sound-related and/or noise friendly everyone keen playing (with) materials in collective musical performance. No previous experience in electronics necessary. (A little of soldering experience could be helpful though)

Bring along if you have
#)Fruits, vegetables, plants (soft tissues are better) and any conductive materials to play around with (can be discarded or just found outside)
#)Few 9V batteries (rechargeable would be the best)
#)Soldering iron, raw 8 Ohm speaker, piezos, alligator-clips etc (If you have)

COOKING BATTERIES:
Creating recipes from unexpected ingredients to 'cook' batteries; Involving various kind of food and drinks, as well as earth and other to determine how much current and voltage is possible to get with each recipe tried; Wiring batteries in series to increase voltage and in parallel to get more capacity; You might like to design your own (battery-)dish for a table-installation as an artistic outcome.

CRACKLE OFF THE BOX:
How to pull out a wide musical noise-scape from body, food, fruits, vegetables, plants, earth.. while playing (with) them. During the workshop we will build a simple audio amplifier and adapt it's circuit that it turns into a kind of' CrackleBox/Kraakdoos - simple but an expressive touch- and pressure-sensitive instrument.
