Abstract

Transiting from the 'ARE YOU CONDUCTIVE?' workshop, which recently took place in Munich, to the 'ARE YOU CONNECTIVE?' a workshop for relative interactions in Berlin, we are hoping to encounter different, but experimentally thinking, DIY and collaboratively working individuals in time, place and space meaningfully and relatively, trying (still) to connect all into organic 'whole' by means of inventing transitions between each other, the inside/outside spaces, analogue and digital, high and low-no-tech.
Suggested content
We will be exploring simple functions and hardware of mobile phones
such as: SMS, blue-tooth, video, in-built photo camera, speakers, vibrator, sensors to generate participatory art project in public space by playing with different ways of connecting the inside of our workshop-space with the outside-neighborhood. For those interested we will also look into a programming environment to code little applications for mobile phones called Mobile Processing to control in-built sensors or create graphical user interfaces. Participants with newer phones are also welcome to use their GPS or video chat function or play with Linux-based mobile operating systems. Btw feel free to bring old, broken phones as well so we can hack the hardware.
It's always a challenge to collaborate with new people for an intense, short period of time. We would like to emphasize that sharing skills and experiences in joined projects will be of importance in this particular workshop.
And in case you will be bored, you can still switch to the Arduino;). On the request we can cover an Arduino board as well as the Arduino and Processing software (basics), experiment further with the resistance and conductivity of different materials, creating hand made switches, analogue sensors, controlling hacked toys/cell phones via an Arduino and things like that.

Possible structure Day 1-5

Investigating the venue, surroundings and possibilities for intervention;
Exploring the neighborhood in terms of integration and being a part of a process;
Ideas round and how those ideas could be related;
Hands-on: Functions and hardware of mobile phones, Mobile Processing or/and Arduino and Processing basics + DIY potentiometers, hacked toys/cell phones controlled via Arduino etc;
Round: 'What have we got done so far' and how all this related;
Collaboratively developing ideas further, helping each other, fluently relating and meaningfully constructing the 'whole';
Public open, enjoying and celebrating;
De-constructing, cleaning up and heading home with happy plans for the future;)

To bring along

0)Ideas and skills to share
1)Lap-top with all necessaries installed
2)Arduino (except for the case that you want to share one it with someone or borrow it from us) + USB cables for your Arduino + breadboard.
3)Soldering iron, wire, servo motors, LEDs, resistors, vans (maybe from broken computers)
4)8 k Ohm speakers
5)Your hacked toys, radios and other devices
6)Resistive and conductive matirials
7)Range of resistors=100 Ohm, 220 Ohm, 10 kOhm, Potentiometers(2)
8)If there are some specific sensors, actuators, hacked toys or any other elements you would like to use during the workshop.
9)Old and new cell phones + cables to connect to PC, if there is no blue-tooth connection. (Note: The Processing software does not on the iPhone)

The workshop aimed at

10-12 technology-related 'artists' working in DIY and experimental spirit. Experience in programming is beneficial, but not essential.
Please make sure that you can manage the whole duration of the workshop = April 20.- 24. 2010, including public part on the evening 24th.

To participate
Please send an e-mail to workshop∗aa-vv∗org with a brief statement of your interest and background. The URL of your activity would be helpful too.

Fee
65,- Euro/the whole lot (Including missing Arduinos, some materials, tee, cookies, surprises ..)
The project is unfunded.

Stefanie Wuschitz
uses interactive technology to build mobile sound and video installations site-specifically encouraging the construction of unique social and collaborative spaces. Her current focus is on subversive public art produced by women with wireless technology. She was one of the organizers of the international festival 'Eclectic Tech Carnival' in Umeå/Sweden and founder of 'Miss Baltazar's Laboratory'= weekly workshops on Open Source Software, Arduino, art techniques as e.g. laser cutting, wearable technology and circuit building (currently based at Metalab/Vienna) as well as conducted the following workshops: Mobile-hack-day, Supersimple Robots Workshop at Letní dílny Čistírna-Prague, XBee Workshop at OKNO Bruessels, Mobile Processing Workshop, Stockholm, Sweden etc
